International Dog Day: A Tribute to Our Best Friends
Every year, on August 26th, dog lovers across the world come together to celebrate National Dog Day, a special day dedicated to our four-legged companions who bring so much joy, love, and loyalty into our lives. But if we're being honest, we dog lovers and dog parents are celebrating every day! Whether they're bounding through the park, lounging in the sun, or snuggled up on the couch, dogs hold a special place in our hearts. Today, let’s take a moment to celebrate the pawsitive impact they have on our world.
A Day to Honor All Dogs National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige to raise awareness about the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year. This hits closer to home with us more and more as we lean into animal advocacy and using our work to give a voice to animals in need. It also recognizes the invaluable service dogs who work tirelessly to assist those with disabilities, the brave canines who serve in the military and police force, and the beloved pets who fill our homes with unconditional love—which of course is us 24/7! Six dogs and two cats certainly fill our house with love, maybe some chaos, but definitely love!
Whether purebred, mixed breed, or rescued, every dog deserves to be celebrated. They provide companionship, reduce stress, and even encourage us to stay active. Staying active was what we thought 6 dogs would do for us, but we're regularly reduced to a cuddle pile that can't get out of bed! lol For many of us, dogs are not just pets—they are family members.
There are countless ways to celebrate dogs every day!
1.Adopt: If you’re ready to expand your family, consider adopting a dog from a local shelter. Millions of dogs are waiting for their forever homes, and adopting not only changes their lives but also enriches yours.
2.Donate: Many shelters and rescues rely on donations to care for abandoned and stray dogs. Even a small contribution can help provide food, shelter, and medical care for these animals.
3.Volunteer: If you’re unable to adopt or donate, volunteering your time at a local animal shelter is a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of dogs waiting for their forever homes.
4.Share Stories of Adoptable Dogs: Help spread the word about adoptable dogs by sharing their stories on social media. Who knows? You might help connect a dog in need with a loving family.
5.Spoil your dog EVERY DAY! Treat your dog to a special day by taking them on an extra-long walk, giving them their favorite treats, or surprising them with a new toy. You could even schedule a fun pet photography session to capture their adorable antics (wink, wink).
Every wag of the tail, every sloppy kiss, and every loyal gaze reminds us just how lucky we are to have dogs in our lives. Happy International Dog Day to all the pups out there—you truly make the world a better place!
